Kids bikes

The bike a kid learns on shapes whether they keep riding. The single most common mistake parents make is buying too heavy — a $200 supermarket bike for a five-year-old often weighs 12 kg, more than a third of the kid's body weight. Imagine yourself riding a 30 kg bike. That's what they're being asked to do.

We've made Base Bikes the only dedicated kids brand we stock because they get this right. Australian-designed, aluminium frames, properly geared (or single-speed where it makes sense), sized by wheel:

12" wheel — balance bike, no pedals. Ages 2–4. The right way to learn before pedals enter the picture.

16" wheel — first pedal bike. Ages 4–6. Single-speed, hand brakes (no coaster brake — those teach the wrong habit).

20" wheel — geared bike, 7-speed, real grown-up componentry shrunk down. Ages 6–9.

24" wheel — the bridge to an adult bike. 8-speed, properly fit for the longer-limbed end of primary school. Ages 8–11.

Base Bikes hold resale value because they last — the frames don't crack, the components don't disintegrate, and the design is timeless enough that a hand-me-down bike looks current five years later.

We also stock kids bikes within broader category brand names.
