MC x Vuelta - that's the wrap
Jeff led from the first stage and never let go. Frank and Gav went at each other right to the final Sunday. Here are the winners and the numbers.
Twenty-three days and twenty-one stages, with one rule that broke almost everyone: never two days off in a row.
Twenty riders logged rides from Saturday 22 August. By the end only three were still eligible for a prize, and they'd spent three weeks making each other suffer.
Jeff went early and never looked back
Jeff opened with 114 km and 1,362 m on stage one and took the lead straight away. He never gave it back. He rode every one of the 21 stage days, then finished in style with 121 km and 1,700 m on the final Sunday. He ended on 1,301 km and 14,047 m, top of every leaderboard in the comp.
Frank and Gav, toe to toe
Behind Jeff, Frank and Gav fought it out the whole way. Frank came out firing and was 100 km clear after the first week, but Gav clawed it back. Frank kept answering: he rode 20 of the 21 stages and took the green jersey for it.
Three Gorges to close it out
Gav saved a big one for the last day: the Three Gorges, 124 km and more than 1,500 m of climbing. It took him to 12,309 m, more than double Frank's total, and sealed the jersey.
The numbers
Twenty riders, 213 rides, 9,486 km and 70,622 m of climbing.
The jerseys
- 🔴 GC: Jeff. 1,301 km and 14,047 m, with a ride on every stage.
- 🔵 KOM: Gav. 12,309 m, sealed by the Three Gorges.
- 🟢 Points: Frank. 20 stage days ridden.
Jeff topped all three leaderboards, but it's one prize per rider, so two jerseys went to the next riders in line.
Jeff, Gav and Frank have each won an MC Classic Service (excluding parts).
