Progress. Sometimes it happens incrementally—small advancements moving things forward. Other times, it hits like a bolt from the blue, a breakthrough moment when everything changes.

The new Altum series from Parlee represents both types of progress. The modern tube shaping, the cutting-edge craftsmanship, even the Altum name all leave an immediate, unmistakable impression: this is something new. Yet at the same time, Altum remains true to the Parlee DNA. In fact, it’s a direct descendent of our benchmark Z series. And that means one thing—ride quality comes first.

Yes, the Altum is lighter. Yes, it has many striking new features and technologies. But the heart and soul of this bike is centered on how it rides. How it leaps into action when you stand up and sprint. How it carves through corners with unrivaled confidence, and disappears beneath you on long, grueling rides. Subtle, evolutionary refinements have long been the Parlee way. Altum is simply the next step in a lineage of bikes that began with the award-winning Z1 and has continued through the Z5.

In short, the Altum represents the culmination of everything we’ve learned from the past two decades of handcrafting the world’s finest carbon fiber road racing bikes.

ALTUM

The lightest model in the Altum range starts with our highest modulus carbon fiber material. Through a combination of complex FEA (Finite Element Analysis) modeling and physical testing, we engineered a new layup process that places the high modulus carbon fiber in strategic areas to maximize weight reduction without negatively impacting strength or stiffness.

One look at the new frame design reveals more pronounced tube shaping and transitions than those of the Altum’s Z series predecessors. The top tube and head tube flare out where they meet the head tube, as do the seat tube and down tube at the bottom bracket area. The result: a superlight frameset (750g frame/280g fork) with increased steering stiffness and pedaling efficiency.

Of course, it’s not just about stiffness and weight. Much of the carbon layup strategy is based on Parlee’s goal of attaining a certain ride quality. The Altum is engineered to feel “snappy” when you stand up and sprint but have just enough compliance, especially in the rear triangle, to give it a smooth ride quality. All of the Altum models use a traditional round 31.6mm seatpost with a hidden, integrated binder for a modern, sleek appearance.

Other new features include increased tire clearance, from 23mm to 28mm, and a new fork design with an integrated carbon crown that helps increase stiffness while shaving 20 grams compared to Z5 SLi model fork. The internal cable routing is compatible with all major component groups, electronic or mechanical, and has been designed to make installation and service as simple as possible.
